Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Hon’ble Secretary DARE and DG ICAR inaugurates National Conference on ‘Enhancing Productivity of Oilseeds in Changing Climate Scenario’ at ICAR-DGR, Junagadh on 7th April, 2018
A three-day (7-9 April, 2018) National Conference on ‘Enhancing Productivity of Oilseeds in Changing Climate Scenario’ was organized at Junagadh. The Conference was jointly organized by the Indian Society of Oilseeds Research (ISOR), Hyderabad and ICAR-Directorate of Groundnut Research (ICAR-DGR), Junagadh.
The conference was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Director General of ICAR Dr. T. Mohapatra in presence of Dr. A.R. Pathak, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Junagadh Agril. University, Junagadh, Dr. T. Radhakrishnan, Director, DGR and directors of other oilseeds institutes. In his inaugural address, Dr Mohapatra, DG, ICAR stressed upon the various issues and challenges to increase the productivity of oilseeds in the country and to increase the income of oilseeds farmers. The Chief Guest of the programme, Dr A.R. Pathak, Hon’ble VC of JAU, mentioned about the oilseeds production scenario in Saurashtra and Gujarat and also the achievements in oilseeds sector in the state. Dr. A. Vishnuvardhan Reddy, Director, ICAR-IIOR, Hyderabad and Vice President ISOR gave an overall picture of the oilseeds scenario in the country and the prospects and challenges. Dr. V.P. Chovatia, Director of Research, JAU, Junagadh mentioned about the oilseeds production and productivity prospects in Gujarat. Dr. P.K. Rai, Director (Actg.), ICAR-DRMR, Bharatpur, mentioned about the issues related to the cultivation of Rapeseed-Mustard in the country. Dr. A.K. Saxena, Director, ICAR-NBAIM, Mau, stressed upon the role of beneficial agriculturally- important microorganisms in improving the productivity of oilseeds crops. Dr. Anupam Barik, Addl. Commissioner, NMOOP, New Delhi highlighted about the various Govt. schemes being undertaken by the ministry in oilseeds sectors and the prospects and challenges in the oilseeds industry. A key note lecture on ‘Enhancing productivity of oilseeds in changing climate scenario’ was delivered by the Hon’ble DG, Dr. T. Mohapatra.
During this three day event, 15 invited lead lectures were delivered on various aspects related to enhancing productivity of oilseeds in changing climate scenario and 56 oral presentations were made by the eminent scientists. A special session for students was organized and 12 students made oral presentations on their research topics and three of them were awarded for their performance, besides, there were 19 poster presentations. The conference covered six thematic areas during the technical sessions, viz., i) Development of climate resilient varieties, ii) Management strategies to mitigate impact of climate change, iii) Crop protection measures to enhance productivity, iv) Processing, post-harvest management and value addition for harnessing the potential of secondary sources of oil, v) Innovative approaches for rapid adoption of technologies, and vi) Policy framework for oilseed sector including doubling of income.
About 150 participants comprising of academicians, researchers, private sector and entrepreneurs, scientists and staff of DGR, JAU Junagadh and other institutes participated in the conference. A panel discussion on ‘Devising road map for doubling farmers income through climate resilient agricultural technologies” was held in the Plenary session on 9th April, 2018. Dr Radhakrishnan T., Director ICAR-DGR and Organizing Secretary of the National Conference proposed the vote of thanks.
